Editorial
We, as the art workers, are going through a very difficult
time. Art market is like a still lake. Once in a while someone throws in some
money and that makes a few ripples of hope. Then that too dies out. As one of
the senior artists puts it, our art market is on a cannibalistic ride. Dead
artists are now in demand. In the meanwhile the living artists are left to die
in indignity. As a gallerist observes, it is not true that there is no money in
the market. Look at the BMWs and Audis that come for a social function. Look at
the shooting prices of properties. Look at the consumer market. The money has
not gone anywhere. It is very much here. But the buyers have lost confidence in
the art market. Deserted galleries, lethargic gallerists, artists who have lost
hope and general negative mood are the traits of our times. Should we let our
art scene die like this? Don’t we have the responsibility of reviving this
dying art market? Don’t we need to gain the confidence of the art buying class?
Yes, we do need to do this. This blog, which is going to be
an online magazine soon, is one humble effort towards keeping our art scene
live. As the editor of this blog, my effort is to create an opinion, keep the
interest for art alive through constant reporting, feature young artists from
all genres of visual art and to discuss art history in length, breadth and
depth. I started this blog in February 2011 and I left it there after a few
uploads. Today, I feel the urgency of having a blog art magazine. I have a few
friends who support me with reports, articles and information. Mumbai based
artist and art writer Sushma Sabnis is the Assistant Editor and Santiniketan
based young art writer Siddharth Sivakumar is a contributing editor.
Internationally acclaimed sculptor, K.S.Radhakrishnan is my mentor and guide.
I want all of you to be a part of it through your creative
contributions. You may write to me in johnyml@gmail.com
. Please be a part of this movement. Read the content and share it.
